Landasan Berpikir Analisis Ekologi Sebuah Kota
    Membicarakan masalah ekologi perkembangan sebuah kota, perlu adanya landasan berpikir yang menjadi pendukung analisis kedepannya. Landasan berpikir biasanya diambil dari beberapa teori mengenai perkotaan dari para pakar perkotaan yang berkompeten. Essai ini akan mengambil beberapa contoh teori analisis kota yang bisa dijadikan landasan berpikir kita dalam mengamati ekologi sebuah kota. Beberapa teori dari pakar analisis perkotaan:
T.G. McGee, seorang pakar perkotaan dari University of British Columbia memberikan teori bahwa kota Jakarta-Bandung, Yogyakarta-Semarang dan Surabaya-Malang akan berkembang menjadi kawasan mega-urban atau Extended Metropolitan Region (EMR) yakni sebuah kawasan perkotaan yang amat luas dengan jumlah penduduk besar melebihi ukuran metropolitan. McGee menambahkan bahwa kawasan EMR terdiri atas kota inti (core city), wilayah metropolitan, serta wlayah-wilayah pedesaan yang tumbuh menjadi pendukung dan sedang mengalami transisi industrialisasi.
Alan Gilbert dan Josef Gugler, penulis buku "Cities, Poverty and Development: Urbanization in The Third World"  memberikan pernyataan bahwa ciri-ciri perkembangan kota-kota di negara dunia ketiga adalah terjadinya polarisasi dan distorsi. Dimana disaat pusat kota mengalami akumulasi modal dan pertumbuhan ekonomi yang memicu akselerasi industrialisasi. Namun, disaat lain kota tersebut menjadi tidak sensitif dengan masalah kemiskinan dan kaum terpinggirkan lainnya. Dengan kata lain, ada beberapa orang yang tergusur haknya dengan perkembangan kota.

Analisis Ekologi Kota Oleh Penulis
    Berlandaskan dengan teori yang ada, penulis berusaha memaparkan analisis dan beberapa pengalamannya dalam menjelajah beberapa kota di Pulau Jawa.
Pendapat McGee yang menyatakan bahwa Jakarta-Bandung, Yogyakarta-Semarang dan Surabaya-Malang akan menjadi kota urban besar (megalocities) memang tidak bisa dinafikan lagi, karena pada kenyataannya kota-kota diatas tumbuh dan berkembang lebih cepat dibanding kota-kota lain di Indonesia. Analisis McGee dilengkapi dengan pemaparan mengenai struktur kota EMR yang sesungguhnya. Dan analisis Gilbert dan Gugler lebih terfokus pada sebab dan akibat dari perkembangan sebuah kota. Sementara penulis sendiri akan menganalisis secara kota-perkota sesuai dengan landasan teori diatas.
a). Jakarta, secara historis memang sejak lama sebagai ibukota negara, pusat ekonomi-bisnis dan pusat pemerintahan. Tidak terelakkan lagi bahwa ketiga-tiganya menyebabkan Jakarta tumbuh menjadi kota yang kelebihan berat badan serta mengalami penyakit kronis. Dimana pertumbuhan jumlah penduduk meningkat tajam, kenaikan jumlah kendaraan bermotor juga mengalami hal yang sama. Kedua-duanya memicu adanya okupasi lahan dan pemukiman serta perluasan jalan raya. Manakala Jakarta berkembang menjadi pusat kota dari segala kota, maka membutuhkan kota-kota di sekelilingnya untuk menjadi kota pendukung. Ini bisa dilihat dimana 90% orang yang bekerja di Jakarta berasal dari kawasan Depok, Bogor, Tangerang dan Bekasi. Jakarta juga membutuhkan kota sekelilingnya untuk membantu pertumbuhan ekonominya agar lebih kencang. Bogor akhirnya menjadi pusat distribusi bahan baku makanan yang meliputi sayur-sayuran (Cipanas dan Puncak Bogor), teh dan kopi dll. Bogor sendiri juga menjadi kota pendukung Jakarta dalam hal perumahan. Kota pendukung perumahan untuk para pekerja di Jakarta bukan hanya Bogor saja, akan tetapi juga di Bekasi, Depok dan Tangerang. Perumahan-perumahan elit bisa dilihat disepanjang kota tersebut, Kemang Village, villa-villa di Puncak Bogor (Bogor), Ciputat, Pondok Indah, Pondok Labu, Pondok Ungu, Pondok Cabe (Depok) dan Jatimulya, Jatiwaringin serta Jatiluhur (Bekasi).
    Secara cepat juga Jakarta juga membangun transportasi ke berbagai kota-kota pendukungnya. Ada ratusan jaringan bus, angkot serta kereta api yang menghubungkan Jadebotabek. Setiap hari saja, dari Kota Bogor ada ratusan bus umum yang berangkat ke Jakarta. Serta ratusan Kereta Listrik yang diberangkatkan sejak pagi pukul 06:00 dari stasiun Bogor (stasiun paling selatan) hingga pukul 22:00 malam. Jakarta akhirnya semakin membesar dengan polarisasi kota-kota di sekitarnya yang tergabung dalam Jadebotabek.
b). Bandung, hanya dua jam perjalanan menggunakan sepeda motor dari Jakarta. Hal ini terjadi manakala jalan tol Jagorawi, Cileunyi-Pasteur dibangun pada awal tahun 2000-an. Bandung seolah menjadi magnet kedua bagi pekerja kantoran di Jakarta yang ingin melepas lelah pada saat weekend. Bandung akhirnya berkembang menjadi pusat hiburan, mulai dari fashion, kuliner serta pusat jajan masyarakat dan hiburan. Dari Jakarta ke Bandung sudah banyak ratusan travel yang siap mendukung melewati jalan tol Jagorawi, Cileunyi-Pasteur. Serta jaringan kereta api dari Jakarta ke Kiaracondong dan Stasiun Bandung. Posisi Bandung sebagai ibukota Jawa Barat semakin memberikan nilai plus tersendiri.
(Penulis pernah tinggal selama lima tahun di Bogor untuk menempuh pendidikan SMP dan SMA).
c). Yogyakarta dan Semarang. Dua kota yang berbeda provinsi serta menjadi ibukota masing-masing dari provinsinya. Yogyakarta sebagai sebuah kota budaya dan pendidikan memiliki beragam nilai plus tersendiri bagi perkembangannya menjadi sebuah kota besar. Sebagai kota pendidikan, Yogyakarta memiliki ratusan lembaga pendidikan, mulai dari sekolah dasar, sekolah menengah hingga perguruan tinggi. Lembaga pendidikan tersebut otomatis menjadi penyedot utama masuknya penduduk dari luar Yogyakarta untuk mendiami wilayah kota pendidikan tersebut. Implikasi dari arus migrasi pelajar dari luar kota ke Yogyakarta ada begitu banyak. Selain faktor-fakto negatif seperti adanya seks bebas tentu saja faktor positif  menjadi potensi untuk berkembangnya bisnis kos-kosan, kuliner serta industri kreatif lainnya. Universitas Gajah Mada pernah melakukan riset bahwa arah perkembangan kota Yogyakarta cenderung berkembang ke arah utara. Dimana batasnya mulai dari Kraton Yogya, Malioboro hingga ke utara, Jalan Kaliurang, UNY hingga terus ke UGM. Ada beragam faktor kenapa kecenderungan tersebut terjadi. Selain banyak perguruan tinggi di wilayah Jogja utara juga pusat-pusat pemerintahan Yogya ada di sebelah utara (Timoho, Kridosono dan Balaikota). Semarang sendiri merupakan kota pantai yang berkembang karena arus ekonomi dari pelabuhan-pelabuhan di pantai utara yang semakin menunjukkan sentiment positif. Arus Impor dan Ekspor Provinsi Jawa Tengah selalu bergerak di pintu gerbang utama Tanjung Mas-Semarang. Selain, itu faktor adanya perguruan tinggi Universitas Diponegoro dan Universitas Negeri Semarang juga menjadi pemicu meningkatnya jumlah penduduk musiman kota Semarang. Antara Semarang dan Yogyakarta dihubungkan oleh jaringan transportasi bus, kereta dan beragam travel lainnya. Yogyakarta dan Semarang didesain untuk menjadi kawasan terpadu dalam hal pariwisata, ekonomi dan budaya yang disebut kawasan JOGLOSEMAR (Jogja, Solo, Semarang).
c). Surabaya-Malang. Secara historis dapat dilihat bahwa semenjak zaman kerajaan dan kolonial, Surabaya telah berkembang menjadi kota pelabuhan yang besar. Hal tersebut pastinya memicu adanya arus urbanisasi dari kota-kota disekelilingnya. Seperti Krian, Sidoarjo, Mojokerto dll. Arus urbanisasi tersebut menyebabkan adanya percampuran kebudayaan yang disebut budaya Arek. Seiring adanya percampuran kebudayaan, Surabaya semakin padat dengan penduduknya dan tentu saja naik ekonomi dan bisnisnya juga. Manakala Surabaya berhasil naik secara ekonomi, Malang juga terkena getahnya, karenanya urat nadi ekonomi Surabaya ditopang secara penuh oleh kota Malang (bahkan sejak zaman kolonial, para residen Belanda lebih sering berlibur ke kota Malang). Malang berkembang menjadi pusat kuliner, pariwisat serta pusat souvenir-souvenir.
